These two are from Benriach’s peated range. The Albariza is finished in PX casks, which is quite a popular finish for peated whiskies and usually works very well. The one I was more excited to try was the Dunder, which was finished in dark rum casks, something much less common, particularly with peat.

Benriach Albariza

Aged 18 years. 46%ABV. Finished in PX casks. No colourant added and non-chill filtered.

Finish: Long. Cherry cough syrup. Raspberry cordial. Earthy peat.

Would I buy this: Yes

Would I order this in a bar: Yes

Would I drink this if someone gave me a glass: Yes

VFM: 3/5

Of the two I think the Albariza outshone the Dunder by far. It had all the hallmarks of a good PX finished peated whisky and the rich earthy peat notes of Benriach went well with the sweet sticky sherry. That said I still prefer the Solstice over it.

I found the Dunder somewhat flat and was a bit disappointed, expected some bolder rum notes.
