This is from one of very very many craft distilleries popping up all over the US lately. It’s distilled in Chicago. This one has accumulated a lot of praise and I was quite excited to try it. It was also the first craft rye I’d tried.
46.5% ABV. Mashbill: 70% Rye, 20% Corn, 10% Malt.
Nose: Sawdust. Woodsap. Superglue. Acetone. Oleoresin Capsicum.
Would I buy this: No
Would I order this in a bar: No
Would I drink this if someone gave me a glass: No
I was really shocked at how terrible this was. Even more so when I learned how much a bottle costs. This tasted very premature too, I’ve had unaged rye spirit before and it was gross as hell, and I’m picking a good deal of those notes up here. I understand that I might have hit a bad batch, but for the distillery to still bottle it and then sell it at such a price is a poor show.
