This is another dram from our Malt Mongers Israel evening where we tried a range of whiskies bottled exclusively for Le Maison Du Whisky (LMDW) in France. This is a Kavalan from Taiwan which has been matured in casks which previously held heavily peated Islay whisky.
NAS. 52.4%ABV. No colourant added, non-chill filtered and bottled at batch strength.
Nose: Dusty peat. Tonic water. Dried orange peel. Red fruits. Sawdust. Brown craft glue. Slightly waxy.
Palate: Salty peat. Dry wood. Floral. Slight hints of white grape juice. Woodspice. Sandalwood. Bitter wood on the swallow.
Finish: Long. Woodspice & bitter wood carry through. Slight hint of liquorice. Wood smoke. Smoked fruits.
Would I buy this: Yes
Would I order this in a bar: Yes
Would I drink this if someone gave me a glass: Yes
This was very interesting stuff. I’ve tried several peated cask whiskies before and have never felt the peat as pronounced as I did with this one. It adds quite nicely to the Kavalan character resulting in a subtle smoky character. The only downside here is the price.
