Highland Park Valkyrie

Thanks to Rani for the sample.

So a few years ago Highland Park rebranded to put more emphasis on their Viking heritage (well the Isle of Orkney’s Viking heritage). Now they’ve gone and rebranded some more with even more Vikings. This one is supposed to replace the Dark Origins expression which was a non-age stated, very sherried expression with a very cool black design.

Aged 3 yerars*.  45.9% ABV. No colourant added.

*for lack of age statement

Nose: Straw. Lemon candies. Whiffs of smoke. Nutty wood. Red fruits. Cacao.

Palate: A tad thin. Grassy peat. Marmalade. Berries. Dry fruit tannins.

Finish: Medium-short. Peat. Cacao. Dark fruit.

Would I buy this: No

Would I order this in a bar: No

Would I drink this if someone gave me a glass: Yes

VFM: 2/5

I found this a lot more flat and one dimensional than the Dark Origins, it did have a bit of a sherry character, and the peat was there, but it was all kind of muted, especially on the finish. Was nice enough to sip but really not anything I’d seek out.

  1. I have not yet tried this one myself, but what I heard and read about it was so-so at best. Which is a shame because I find the Valkyrie to have one of the best package and bottle designs in Highland Park’s current portfolio (together with the Full Volume, which I also have not sipped so far).
