Springbank Local Barley 10 – Reddit Scotch Review #500!

Local Barley 11 just in the picture for fun

Well this is quite a milestone. Enough of one to have cracked open my recently received bottle of Springbank’s latest Local Barley bottling (though that would have happened anyway). It took me a while to start taking notes on the whiskies I drink, but a huge encouragement to do so was the reddit /r/scotch sub. Now that I’m 500 (Scotch) whiskies down the line, I can’t express how awesome of a community it is and how great it feels to be a part of it.

Springbank 14 Bourbon Wood – BTC #06

Forgot a picture this time. This one is from whiskybase.com

Will this is a pleasant surprise, my first direct hit of the BTC. This is a special release from Springbank from a few months back which I missed, and didn’t really get to try, but I recognised a certain funkiness which immediately rang some Springbank bells. Later on I picked up some sweet lactic notes though which kind of led me to thinking it was a weird Port Charlotte bottling, luckily after consulting with my friend Yoav from whiskygospel.com, whos’s also participating, I changed my guess back to this at the last minute.

Hazelburn 13 Sherry Cask Matured

A while back I mentioned some interesting Campbeltown releases, among them this one. I reviewed the other two, an 8 year old Kilkerran Cask Strength and this year’s Longrow Red release, but didn’t get round to this one for a bit. Unfortunately the heat has been getting the better of me and I’m not often in the mood for whisky.

Longrow Red 13 Malbec Cask

I’ve been waiting for this one for a long time. Ever year Springbank releases a Longrow Red, a cask strength longrow usually aged a little over 10 years, which has been partially matured in casks which previously held various types of red wine. Off the top of my head previous released have used port, pinot noir and shiraz.

Longrow 2001 Springbank Society

IMG_20170616_112044Thanks to /u/buddy_dosser for the sample via /r/Scotchswap on reddit.

Been a while since my last update, unfortunately things have been quite busy so I haven’t really had much time so really sit down and enjoy some of the whiskies I’ve been meaning to try. Now that I have some time I was really excited to sit down with this one.

Springbank 12 Fresh Port Hogshead

Thanks to /u/buddy_dosser for the sample via /r/ScotchSwap on reddit.

I’m always happy to get my grubby paws on a Springbank Society bottling. Particularly this one because it’s been matured in a port cask, a fresh one no less, and I’m a sucker for that peat/port combination, and because port matured Springbanks are not something I come across often. Let’s see what this does.

Springbank 11 Local Barley

Springbank kicked up a real fuss last year when they released a 16 year old Local Barley bottling. It was essentially reviving an older series of there’s where they made whisky using barley grown on the farms surrounding Campbeltown. The plan now is to release a bottling every year for 5 years each using a different variety of barley.

Hazelburn 9 Barolo Cask Matured

Hazelburn is one the three labels that come out of Springbank distillery. This is their non-peated variety, which is also triple distilled, a bit of an oddity in Scotch Whisky and the norm in Irish Whiskey production. It’s also the label I am least well acquainted with.

Springbank 21 Single Cask

Continuing on the heels of my last post with yet another Springbank. This is a release from this year, but has spent 21 years being aged and is the oldest Springbank I’ve ever tried. This one was bottled as a series of 21 year old single cask bottlings. This particular sample was from the cask released to the UK market.

Springbank 15 Old Bottling

Thanks to /u/gregbenson314 for the sample via /r/ScotchSwap’s Secret Santa campaign on reddit.

I make no secret of my love for just about anything that runs off of the stills of Springbank distillery. So you can imagine how excited I was to receive this along with some other amazing drams in my mailbox.
