One of the whiskies that I cannot bring myself to like, try as I might, is Edradour. I have heard of good ones but have yet to try one myself. Edradour is owned by the renowned independent bottler, Signatory Vintage and is a very small (before Kilchoman the smallest) distillery in the Southern Highlands and are known for a very wide variety of cask finished and maturations.

A while ago some of the more well known and influential guys on the alcohol scene here started a Facebook group for enthusiasts here in Israel. Aside from providing a platform for discussion and sharing cool pictures they’ve also been hard at work organizing events and deals for members and so forth. One result of this was a tasting evening in partnership with online retailer Sipil to show the range of Ancnoc and Balblair that they’re starting to bring into the country (more whisky, yay!)

I’ve come to try quite a few older Glen Gariochs, usually by way of my friend Michael from Malt & Oak, who also provided me with this sample, and it’s really been a fantastic thing to discover. This one is from 1978 distillate and released for The Whisky Shop in the UK in 2011 as a single cask exclusive and was particularly well received.

Time for some whisky geekery and some love for Clynelish which is something I haven’t gotten to do in a while. I’ve mentioned before but Clynelish was the first single malt I ‘discovered’ on my own so I have a bit of a soft spot for it.
I’m always on the lookout for independent bottlings of Old Pulteney. I really like the (now discontinued) 17 & 21 year old distillery bottlings, but IB’s are few and far between and it’s always fun to get a feel for the same spirit done differently. This one is from Cadenhead’s Authentic collection, it says it was matured in a bourbon hogshead, judging by the colour we’re talking about a refill cask so should be pretty raw spirit here.

I’ve mentioned Loch Lomond distillery before from a tasting I attended a little under 2 years ago but it warrants mentioning again. It’s probably one of the most interesting distilleries in Scotland. Aside from functioning as both a grain and a malt distillery, with traditional column and pot stills, they have a 3rd set of stills which are a bit of a hybrid.
A while back a fellow Israeli whisky fiend and blogger, Michael (found over at maltandoak.com), asked if I wanted in on a bottle share of a very special Glen Garioch. Now aside from the bottle just sounding really enticing, I could see how excited Michael was about it, and he is the biggest Glen Garioch fanboy I’ve ever met, so this had to be something special.

Sorry about the delay since my last post. I was on holiday in Italy but am back and well rested. Very shortly before I left, to the point that I didn’t have time to write this up, I was invited to a very special tasting event. I recently posted about and evening that our whisky club, MMI had in conjunction with Sipil, a local importer and online retailer, who have recently begun to import Douglas Laing products to Israel, currently the only independent bottler on the market.
Our whisky club, Malt Mongers Israel, usually takes a break in August, but we had a special ad hoc meeting this month and with good reason. Independent bottlings are making a return to our shelves! Sipil, a local online store and importer which is very familiar to all the hardcore whisky geeks here, has begun importing Douglas Laing’s range.

I had no clue what this was when I set up the swap but I know Glengoyne is a malt that ages fantastically and that I’m a huge fan. After some digging it turns out that this is a special release from quite some time ago (2000) so the distillate itself is quite old (1972).
