One of the really exciting parts of visiting Bruichladdich distillery is their Valinch casks. A pair of rotating casks with some quite eclectic whiskies in them, and a tap, instead of a real valinch, so you don’t spill whisky all over yourself and spend the rest of the day walking around smelling like a drunk who fell into his pot of boot stew (from experience).

I don’t think I’ve reviewed an Octomore on here before. Octomore is the most heavily peated expression from Bruichladdich and was born of an expremient by Jim McEwan and Mark Reynier where they tried to get hold of the most heavily peated barley possible and made whisky with it.
I’m not going to write too much about what I did on the Sunday on Islay. I intended to use the day for hiking as the public transport doesn’t run there on Sundays, but the weather had other ideas. Instead I took a nice long walk along the Three Distilleries path. I stopped at Laphroaig and had a dram of the 10-year-old Cask Strength, then went to Ardbeg for some lunch at the Old Kiln Cafe. I walked back to Port Ellen and went for a pint at one of the local pubs.

I just recently returned from a trip to the beautiful island of Islay. Islay is a little green island in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland, and is most well known for being home to 8 whisky distilleries who make some damn fine stuff.

Whisky number 13 in the Tapuz blind tasting competition, and finally something I almost guessed correctly. A sweet, heavily peated treat of a dram. My experience with Port Charlotte is not as varied as I’d like, having only tried the PC10, PC11 and an SMWS bottling, so for my guess I went with the PC11, but thankfully I wasn’t too far off.
