Benriach Cask Strength Batch 1

Thanks to Yoav at Whiskygospel.com for the sample

With the success of the No Age Statement (NAS) Glendronach Cask Strength, it’s no surprise that there is now a NAS Benriach Cask strength as well. Quite a different beast to the Glendronach, the Benriach is a light, fruity Speysider, best served Bourboned, or with some other light finish.

This is another 18 year old peated Benriach. This one’s “thing” is that it was finished in Madeira casks.  I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned before, but Madeira is a type of Portuguese fortified wine , and it can do some very cool stuff to whisky, usually adding some lovely aromatic, spicy notes, and changing the character quite a bit.

These two are from Benriach’s peated range. The Albariza is finished in PX casks, which is quite a popular finish for peated whiskies and usually works very well. The one I was more excited to try was the Dunder, which was finished in dark rum casks, something much less common, particularly with peat.

This is a special edition of Benriach, originally released as a 15 year old and then as a 17 year old. It’s peated and finished in port pipes, a combination I quite like. I had my eye on this for a while and I eventually bought it off a friend (thanks Yori) and kept it for when I finished moving into my new apartment, and it was worth waiting for.

This past December, Wine & Flavours, one of our few regular specialist liquor stores (of the small handful in Israel) held a really great tasting of the Glendronach range (12, 15, 18, 21 and a 19 year old single cask) as well as 2 Benriachs which the importer has started regularly distributing (Heart of Speyside NAS & 16)

The Benriach distillery is a Speyside distillery that is quite known for its interesting array of cask finishes. Aside from these they also make a peated malt which also comes in a just as varied array of finishes. At the heart of their core range are their regular ten year old unpeated whisky and the peated Curiositas (there are two respective NAS expressions, but let’s not go there). This is nice because it can give you a sort of baseline before trying all the crazy finishes and variations.
