Caroni 1998 – The Duchess

Sample provided by Best of Whiskies

I’ve reviewed quite a few rums from the now closed Caroni distillery in Trinidad before and have come to like its heavy character quite a bit. Caronis are pretty much exclusively available from independent bottlers and this particular one comes from the Netherlands based “The Duchess”, a brand of the online store Best of Whiskies.

Clynelish 1995 Signatory Vintage

WhatsApp Image 2018-02-16 at 19.14.59Thanks to Yosi for the sample (and the image)

I sometimes regret how little love I give to Clynelish, for years my favourite distillery, still is I’ve just added several others to the list as well. This is one of many many bottles of mid to late 90’s distillate put out by Signatory as part of their Cask Strength Collection. It’s one of the independent bottling labels I really feel confident when trying as they’re almost always fantastic and when they’re not they’re still pretty damn good.

Heaven Hill 20 Cadenhead’s 175th Anniversary bottling.

I’ve been active in the whisky community on reddit for around 3 years now and it’s been a really amazing time and has put me in touch with some really great folks who share my love of spirits. Some really cool stuff has come out of it and one such thing is a bottle share we recently did of this fine stuff.

Imperial 1995 Signatory Vintage

Imperial is a distillery that I only discovered recently, which is a pity because it was mothballed in the late 90’s and demolished in 2005, so it is no more. What’s nice is that it never developed such a cult following like Brora (drool) or Port Ellen, so there are still affordable bottles floating around.

Clynelish 1995 Signatory Vinatge

Clynelish is a distillery that hold a very special place in my heart and it’s been a long time since I’ve had anything other than the 14 year old distillery bottling. So I was very excited to get hold of this independent bottling from Signatory’s Cask Strength Collection (the ones with the really cool decanter).

Deanston 18 and Deanston 20 – A comparison

Originally reviewed on reddit on 26/02/16

In a recent shared purchase which I did with some friends we got 2 Deanstons, so I figured I’d do a comparative review. The first Deanston is an 18-year-old matured in Hogsheads and then finished in first fill Bourbon casks, bottled at the Burn Stewart standard ABV of 46.3%. The second one is 20 years old and matured for the entire time in ex-Oloroso casks, and bottled at cask strength, that being 55.3% ABV.
