Port Ellen 1979 Bottling for Whisky Live Tel Aviv 2018

IMG_20180519_210455

I never really thought I’d be making a Port Ellen post. Let alone from my own bottle. For those unfamiliar with the distillery, it was an Islay distillery which shut down in 1983, owned by a company that would eventually become part of Diageo, they left quite a healthy stock of casks which have slowly been bottled over the years. Whisky distilled in a distillery that shut down before I was born is something special indeed.

More Douglas Laing with Malt Mongers Israel

IMG_20171225_200001

Once again our whisky club, Malt Mongers Israel (MMI), met up to try some more whisky, because there sure it a lot of it to try. And once again we tried some Douglas Laing bottlings. DL’s importer here in Israel, SIPIL, has brought in some more bottlings and let us have a preview of them.

Bowmore 17 SMWS 3.271 The Perfect Cure – BTC 2017 #17

3-271

Image pilfered from the SMWS website because I was silly and forgot to take a picture for this one.

I smelled Islay on this right away but it was odd because it was quite subdued in its peat profile, yet obviously cask strength. The only thing that came to mind was one of Kilchoman’s Cask Strength 100% Islay realeses. I didn’t even think about good old Bowmore. Bowmore is quite notorious for having sub-par distillery bottlings but an excellent base spirit, a lot of the damage being done by chill filtration and low ABV and this is an example of just how good the spirit can be if just left to do its thing.

Laphroaig 10 Cask Strength Batch 004 – BTC 2017 #11

IMG_20171216_185533

As I mentioned in my post about whisky #10, we had yet to have an Islay whisky, and I assumed #10 might be from there and had no idea what was waiting for me the next day. Well it was one of my favourite distillery bottlings of all, the glorious cask strength version of Laphroaig 10, which I guessed wrong , but to my credit I did get the distillery right this time (obviously with some doubt, but hey). I’ve actually had a dram from this batch before while I was visiting Islay, but it was a comfort dram after a long, cold, wet day so no notes, until now.

Laphroaig 16 Cadenhead’s Authentic Collection

Thanks to /u/buddy_dosser for the sample via /r/ScotchSwap on reddit

This is a sample from a swap we did quite some time ago, unfortunately Summer hit pretty hard and I just couldn’t enjoy a Laphroaig properly in such hot weather. Fortunately it’s cooled down a bit (at least in the evening) so I finally popped this open.

Kilchoman 2012 K&L Wines Exclusive Red Wine Cask

IMG_20170807_222521

I often mention my disappointment in being so far from K&L Wines in California, but then remind myself that if I did it would not be very good for my wallet. Namely because they have some incredible exclusive bottlings. Now and then they manage to find their way to me, in this case in the form of a bottle share. I really love Kilchoman’s young single cask bottlings too, never tried a red wine cask though.

Octomore 10 2nd Edition

IMG_20170811_185923 1

Thanks to /u/dramboy for the sample vis /r/ScotchSwap on reddit

A few years ago Bruichladdich released a 10 year old expression of their super heavily peated Octomore, which is usually bottled at closer to 5 years in age. That one was from some of the original octomore stock so was peated to around 80ppm. Recently they went and released a 2nd edition of the stuff, this one peated to 167ppm and matured in fresh bourbon and white Grenache casks.
